SUE BROWN AND LORRAINE IRWING: CALL AND CRY
(Traditional songs from around the British Isles and beyond: unaccompanied female harmony)

Cat. No. WGS 284 CD

'Sue Brown and Lorraine Irwing are an Oxford based duo who have been singing together for some time and broke the embargo on duos at the Bracknell Harmony Day last year when they won the Harmony Competition hands down. The sleeve notes describe them as having their 'roots firmly in the tradition' and the CD backs that up in no uncertain terms having seventeen tracks mainly from the English but including Scottish, Irish and French traditions, all of which are sung entirely unaccompanied giving a bare but not cold feel. I would particularly recommend 'Fionnghuala', a lively and spirited example of Hebridean mouth music (but not recommended for those who can't remember words!).' Shire Folk magazine, UK

'The winsome idiosyncratic harmonies of these two young singers lends a great deal of charm to a generous helping (17 tracks) of excellent traditional songs.' Folk on Tap magazine, UK

'Their recording is a success due to their ability as singers and a selection of songs that enable them to present their command of a number of singing styles, from all the Home countries and France, from mediaeval times through to modem, they perform confidently when harmonising or in unison and never fail to emphasise the words and story rather than just perform.' Buzz magazine, UK

This fine collection of songs includes Agincourt Carol, which dates back to the fifteenth century, and draws on the work of collectors such as Cecil Sharp and Lucy Broadwood. Beautifully delivered, the album has already started to receive high praise from home and abroad.

One email correspondent from the US folk radio programme DJ's forum said, 'I haven't reacted to a record like this since I first heard the Watersons, back in 1968 or so'

QUIMANTU: MAR ADENTRO
(Chilean folk: male vocals, guitar, cuatro, charango, quena, quenacho, pan pipes, violin, bombo, claves, maracas)

NEW RELEASE: Cat. No. WGS 286 CD

Mauricio Venegas, musical director of Quimantu, was formerly a member of Incantation, the UK-based band who took pan pipes into the charts with their instrumental hit, Cacharpaya. Quimantu's last album was described in UK magazine, Time Out, as an 'excellent blend' of all those things which have made Andean pan pipe bands so familiar. The magazine also commented on the 'beautiful folky tunes'.

Quimantu were formed by Chilean Mauricio Venegas in 1981. The Group has worked continuously in the U.K. and Europe and have quickly built up a reputation as one of the finest Latin American Bands to emerge. Drawing on ideas from different countries the band has brought to life the rich musical heritage of South America blending those traditions with their own contemporary influences. The live performances take the audience from the peaks of the Andean mountains to the depths of the Amazon rainforest.

Quimantu provided much of the ethnic instrumentation for the 80's group Incantation culminating in the recording of the haunting theme from The Mission shot on location in South America and starring Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons.

Further film and television work followed and the group has worked alongside John Williams, Richard Harvey, Stanley Meyer and Latin American composers Cesar Isella and Osvaldo Torres.

Having completed soundtracks for the acclaimed Melancholy, The Honorary Consul, Priest and Ladybird, Quimantu lent their unique style to Richard Harvey's and Ralph Steadman's The Plague and the Moonflower, broadcast on BBC 2 with Ben Kingsley and Ian Holm.

The release of this, their latest album, marks a further step in their career. The album has all the rich vibrancy that is expected of Quimantu but includes tracks which are influenced by the musical heritage of other countries. The album includes previously unrecorded original works from Mauricio Venegas as well as some traditional pieces.

IAN GILES: THE AMBER TRIANGLE

'Ian Giles has the original 'amber voice', rich, resonant, fluid and wide-ranging. As you'll hear, Ian chooses his songs carefully; this album includes favourites gathered over the years. His splendid first solo CD is a clear decalaration of intent.' Pete Coe
